For 2014, BMW decided to go more evolution than revolution for its new X5 crossover. The German automaker’s Sports Activity Vehicle looks plenty familiar inside and out, but there are plenty of enhancements lurking just below the surface.

Among the improvements is the addition of the sDrive35i to the lineup, which is the first rear-wheel drive X5 ever offered. The move isn’t surprisingly as BMW is keen on improving MPG figures, as evidenced by shrinking engines and more turbos. Naturally, all-wheel drive is also available on this model, and either way power is produced via a a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. This unit produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque and routes all that power through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Buyers can also opt for the more potent X5 xDrive50i which features a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine producing 480-horsepower. That’s 45 more horsepower than the outgoing V8 model. This model also gets an eight-speed automatic and can propel this five-seater from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.9 seconds.

Diesel lovers can rejoice knowing that the 2014 BMW xDrive35d is also in the lineup. However, the updated model delivers lightly less power that the previous model, with 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Despite a modest 10-hp dip, BMW promises that performance has been improved.

Standard equipment across the entire X5 range includes BMW’s Auto Start-Stop system, BMW’s iDrive 4.2 Navigation System with Touchpad, 10 years of BMW Assist eCall service, 10 years of BMW TeleService, BMW Apps, 40-20-40 split-folding rear seat, and Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering, to name just a few.

With a range of engines, drivetrains, and amenities, there’s certainly something for everyone inside the 2014 X5. That being said, consumers will have to pay plenty for any of their choices. The newly available rear-wheel drive 2014 X5 sDrive35i will start at $53,725 and the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i is priced at $56,025. The 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d price is $57,525 and the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i will start at $69,125.
