Next-Gen Mitsubishi Lancer Evo to Generate 500-HP and Low Emissions

In recent years, Mitsubishi hasn’t been the formidable player in the U.S. market that it once was. With shrinking sales and market share, the automaker has honed in on the burgeoning electric vehicle market. However, Mitsubishi has also promised more hybrid vehicles for its lineup in the coming years and new reports suggest that a performance-oriented hybrid isn’t too far away.

According to the UK’s Autocar, Mitsubishi is planning a new plug-in hybrid Lancer Evolution that will deliver performance comparable to the Nissan GT-R. Citing what it says are “highly placed Mitsubishi executives,” the motoring mag claims that this rumored Evo will feature a 2.0-liter gas engine with two 80-horsepower electric motors. Total power output would be around 500 horsepower.

With all that electric tech on board, the PHEV Lancer Evo will also be capable of achieving 150 miles per gallon and will offer an all-electric driving range of as many as 40 miles. Although the powertrain sounds fantastic, Mitsubishi would likely borrow from technology it’s already developed, including EV tech from the MiEV Evolution II plug-in (pictured) that recently competed at Pikes Peak.

It’s important to note that the next-generation Nissan GT-R is also rumored to become a hybrid. It seems that maintaining performance is equally as important as offering low emissions and decent range. While all this sophisticated technology sounds good on paper, Mitsubishi execs have acknowledge that charging infrastructure still stands in the way of EV and PHEV vehicle adoption and the company’s sales goals.
