Mercesdes-Benz Unveils New 621-HP S65 Flagship Sedan

2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG

Mercedes has just revealed its new flagship sedan—the S65 AMG. While it still boasts all the technology and comforts you would expect to find in a loaded S-Class, this new model is tuned for serious performance; capable of blowing the doors off the likes of the Audi S8, BMW 7-Series, Maserati Quattroporte, and Jaguar XJR.

What makes the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG so special is the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 under the hood. It produces a staggering 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. All that power is managed by a new seven-speed automatic transmission and helps the large sedan sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, while allowing it to reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour.

That kind of propulsion would certainly make this German sedan a blast to drive on the autobahn. Interestingly enough, there’s one feature that’s missing from the powertrain–all-wheel drive. Traction is more of an issue in the S65 with all that power sent to the rear wheels compared to the S63, which has AWD. That could explain while the S63 actually offers quicker acceleration.

Chances are, you won’t notice the slight difference. As one of the most technologically advanced automobiles money can buy, this top-of-the-line S-Class has plenty of features to keep you comfortable and entertained. A new head-up display will keep you informed as you’re traveling at lightening speed, all while you relax in diamond-quilted nappa leather upholstery. An AMG-tuned suspension system will keep that car planted and composed in the curves. Other features on the S65 include adaptive steering, a lightweight lithium-ion battery (as the new S63), a carbon and aluminum engine cover to keep weight down, and 20-inch forged alloys. Ceramic brakes are also available.

“Soon after the successful launch of the S63 AMG, we are unveiling the new S65 AMG,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG. “Supreme exclusivity and incomparable dynamism provide the guarantee of a high fascination potential. With the third generation of the S65 AMG, we offer our loyal and discerning V12 customers a unique high-performance automobile.”

The new Mercedes-Benz S65 will get plenty of attention this month with debuts at the  LA Auto Show and Tokyo Motor Show. You can find more information on this luxurious, pavement-devouring sedan below. Pricing has yet to be annouced, but it should arrive in U.S. showrooms early next year.
