Mercedes Ups the Ante in the All-New S63 AMG

At first blush, it may not seem like the all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic would be overwhelmingly impressive in a drag race. After all, the most impressive bits of a range-topping, full-size luxury sedan are typically on the inside and not under the hood. But thanks to its lightweight construction, and 664 pound-feet of torque, this beast will sprint from 0-60 mph in just 3.9-seconds.

The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine delivers 577 horsepower and uses lightweight parts to deliver spirited driving dynamics. An advanced all-wheel drive system keeps the car planted at all times. Overall, the sedan has lost 220 pounds compared to its predecessor. The outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminum. Even the spare wheel recess is made of carbon fiber in an effort to shave off extra pounds.

“Following the successful launch of the A45 AMG and the CLA45 AMG, the new S63 AMG 4MATIC highlights our expertise in the automotive high-end segment,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “Lightweight construction and absolute performance are among the key strengths of the new flagship model from Mercedes-AMG. The new S63 AMG 4MATIC likewise leads the way when it comes to perfection, high-class appeal and quality. We are also offering the S63 AMG 4MATIC with the performance-oriented AMG all-wheel drive system 4MATIC for the first time to target new markets: the S63 AMG 4MATIC is just the ticket for customers who attach importance to four-wheel drive due to weather conditions.”

The S63 AMG also boasts a sports exhaust system with automatic logic- controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the sedan’s 7-speed automatic transmission is in “C”, or Controlled Efficiency mode, the flaps remain closed to curb unwanted noise—ideal perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and quicker, for full aural stimulation and access to the hallmark AMG engine sound.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the new S63 AMG has been designed to meet the highest standards in terms of high-class appeal, quality and perfection. As such, the sedan’s interior quality and luxury are equally impressive as its performance. Occupants are bathes in fine nappa leather while the driver is confronted with a ports steering wheel that features a contoured rim, perforated leather in the grip area and aluminum shift paddles.

“We have unquestionably achieved our aim of making the new S63 AMG 4MATIC more powerful, lightweight and efficient than its predecessor,” added Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and Board Member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “In terms of driving dynamics as well, the S63 AMG 4MATIC has made giant leaps forward – not least thanks to the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive.”
