Fiat Teams Up With Vans to Create the Ultimate Surf Wagon

Fiat 500L Vans Concept

The Vans shoe brand is synonymous with surfing and Southern California beach culture. While Fiat doesn’t share the same image as the popular skate- and surf-wear brand, the two partnered for a distinctive concept that serves as the perfect vehicle for cruising around the beach.

Unveiled over the weekend at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing, just south of Los Angeles in Huntington Beach, Calif., the Fiat 500L-Vans concept was highly customized to resemble a Vans high-top shoe.

Complete with the same iconic checkerboard-pattern that Sean Penn’s slacker character wore in the 1982 teen comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the 500L was immediately recognizable as a Vans project.

The Vans inspiration extends through the the interior as well. There’s Vans logo stickers on the instrument panel and the waffle sole design pattern is even evident on the pedals.

Designed to be the perfect vehicle for surfers, the 500L naturally features a roof rack with a basket and a double-decker surfboard carrier.

With it’s 18-inch matte black wheels, two-tone body cladding, and aggressive look, this concept is more of an off roader than the demure 500L that’s in dealerships now. Perhaps Fiat is hinting of a new rally-inspired model to shake up the growing B-segment.
