550-HP 2014 Jaguar XJR Takes on the Big Apple

Jaguar’s super luxe sedan, the XJ, has just received a healthy dose of attitude. The 2014 Jaguar XJR is making its official debut this week at the New York Auto Show, donning a new 550-hp 5.0-liter V8 engine and other enhancements to help it take on the likes of the Audi S8 and other high-performance full-size sedans.

With the 2014 XFR-S’ mighty powerplant under the hood, the new XJR can propel from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds—an impressive feat for a sedan of its size. Other performance enhancements include lightweight 20-inch wheels and a body kit with functional aerodynamic upgrades that include a new front splitter, rear spoiler, and hood vents. Despite offering loads of power, the new range-topping Jag delivers surprisingly decent fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

According to Jaguar, the XJR’s suspension has been finely tuned on Germany’s famed Nürburgring. With performance springs, continuously variable dampers, and a new Dynamic Stability Control system, the XJR promises to deliver optimum grip and handling at high-speed. It even boats an Electronic Active Differential that routs power to the wheels that need it the most.

“The XJR offers greater steering precision, higher levels of control and enhanced high speed stability, with the trade-off in refinement being very small,” Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity. “The increase in power and torque give this car truly effortless, seamless performance.”

Delivering opulence and track-devouring performance won’t come cheap. The standard-wheelbase 2014 Jaguar XJR will be priced from $116,895 including destination when it arrives in showrooms. A long-wheelbase model can be had for $119,895.

“This XJR is the flagship XJ and I’m delighted we’ve got it back into the range,” added Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Design Director. “This is a premium luxury supercar that also has an extremely purposeful look to it. This car will surprise, there’s no doubt about it.”
