2014 Volkswagen Jetta to Get Turbo Four

Volkswagen is officially ditching its 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the beloved Jetta in favor of a 1.8-liter turbocharged, direct injected four-cylinder unit. This same 158-horsepower engine is currently available on European Passats and CCs.

For the 2014 Jetta, VW will be building its new engine in Mexico. The move will help boost fuel economy over the naturally aspirated five-cylinder, which will likely cease to exist following the switch.

It’s unknown at this time just how much more mpg can be expected from this new engine, but it is significantly lighter than the outgoing unit. Additionally, new electric power steering is also expected to help improve fuel economy. It should complement the additional of a 45-mpg hybrid model, which will arrive later this year.

Aside from fuel economy, the updated 2014 VW Jetta should also boast more responsive handling. Suspension tuning will be tweaked specifically to deliver a sportier driving experience.
